Kingston University Computer Geeks Society (KUCGS)

Co-Founder and President ELECT

The society was set up by a small group of individuals who have a wealth of knowledge and experience within the industry.

We have taken our members to Microsoft conferences, MobileNation HQ, brought in professionals to do events (for example, BenchTec UK came to put on an over clocking show), and run a series of workshops including a Microsoft Certified IT Professional course. We also promote networking within the industry be it for future placements, building a career whilst at university or just getting involved in the scene.

Most importantly, we support public education initiatives that show that IT/Computing is about far more than just using a PC. A particular focus of ours is promoting careers in IT/Computing to school children and addressing the current problems with finding industry based employment after leaving education.

Live Streaming Technical Support

I am employed by the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Computing (SEC), Kingston University, to livestream lectures.

I am the first undergraduate to be employed to take on this role - usually only PHD students undertake livestreaming responsibilities. I livestreamed events as part of KUCGS and the faculty were so impressed they approached us to help with first year lectures.

I have also livestreamed various events for the Kingston University Students' Union (KUSU), such as Annual General Meetings, Freshers' Fayres and demonstrations.

Year 2

Network Communications

This module encompassed the first part of Cisco's CCNA Certification scheme, exploring how data is moved around networks, in an effort to better understand the concepts on modern network systems.

Advance Programming Concepts

  • This module involved working as part of a team to create a Java-based storage system. We created an application that stored and managed information about Smartphones for customers.

Network Software

This module further developed my knowledge of Cisco's CCNA Certification scheme and increased my skills base in this area. It also covered HTML, CSS and XML.

Operating Systems

This module encompassed the first part of Cisco's CCNA Certification scheme, exploring how data is moved around networks, in an effort to better understand the concepts on modern network systems.
